It hangs and adheres to a smooth clean surface. Wipe the spot with a dry cloth first so the mount grips fully.

Both. The grid supports the crown and lets the brim keep whatever shape it came with.
Will it damage paint or a door?
It is designed to come off cleanly. Remove it slowly and evenly rather than pulling from one corner.
Can I use it for anything else?
